If you have previously registered to vote, you do not have to register again for each election.
Your registration is valid until you meet one of the following conditions:
- If you move to another address. This includes moving:
- within the same voting precinct/district
- within the same county
- to a new city or county in Virginia
- to a new city or county in a different state
- If you change your name
- If a court convicts you of a felony or deems you mentally incompetent
Moving Within Virginia
If you have moved from one address in Virginia to another address in Virginia, you must update your voter registration. You may visit the Citizen Portal of the Virginia Department of Elections website to update your registration.
Moving Across State Lines
If you have moved to Virginia from another state, you can not transfer your registration. You must register in Virginia. Call or visit any voter registrar and ask for a voter registration form.
Changing Your Name
If you have changed your name, you must update your voter registration. You may visit the Citizen Portal of the Virginia Department of Elections website to update your registration.
Restoring Your Voting Rights
Persons convicted of a felony, who want their voting rights restored, can apply online here.
Persons judged by a circuit court to be mentally incompetent, who want their rights restored, must obtain a court order restoring their competency.
