Registering to Vote

Qualifications

The following qualifications must be met to register to vote. Voters must:

  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be a King George, Virginia resident
  • be 18 or older by the next general election
  • have voting rights restored, if previously convicted of a felony
  • have a court order restoring competency, if previously judged mentally incompetent by a circuit court

The Registration Process

Registering to vote is completely free and can be done any time of the year; however, registration closes 21 days before a general or primary election and 14 days before a special election. You can register to vote by visiting:

  • the Virginia Department of Elections website
  • any public library in Virginia
  • any special registration site set up by the registrar's office
  • any state agency office
  • any United States Post Office
  • any Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles location
  • any voter registrar's office in Virginia

If you need a paper application, call the King George Registrar at 540-775-9186, and we will send you a mail-in application.

When you register to vote, you must provide:

  • some form of ID
  • your full legal name
  • your full social security number
  • your current King George domicile
  • any place where you have been a registered voter out of state (if applicable)

You will not be required to state your political party preference. Virginia does not have voter registration by party.

Voting on Election Day

Once registered, the registrar will send you a voter registration card with the name and location of your polling place. You can find your local, state and national officials on GIS's My Elected Representatives app

If you move out of the county, it could affect your voting eligibility for the upcoming election.

General elections are always held on a Tuesday in November. If the Democratic or Republican parties nominate their candidates by a primary election, it will be held on the third Tuesday in June. If you are a registered voter, you may vote in any primary. However, if a primary is held for both parties on the same day in the same election district, you must choose which party you wish to vote for and may vote in only one.

On election day, the polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. If you are in line by 7 p.m., then you will still be able to vote.
