On August 27, 2019 @ 12:40 hrs, Units were requested by Animal Control to assist with an animal rescue at the Dahlgren Walmart parking lot. Animal Control advised of a kitten stuck in a storm drain in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Rescue Engine 2 AOS to find a kitten in a 12 inch horizontal drain pipe (>100 ft. long). Animal Control advised that the kitten had been in the drain system for 2 days. They made several attempts at rescue without prevail. The storm drain was accessible on both ends by manholes. Drain pipe was approximately 4-5 feet under the parking lot. Crews used the 4 gas meter to analyze atmospheric conditions in the manholes. All reading were within normal limits. It was determined that the manholes were non-permit required confined spaces. Animal Control requested that crews "encourage" the kitten towards the downhill side with hose streams. Crews entered the manhole with a 1.75" handline. The kitten was successfully encouraged to the downhill manhole where it was retrieved by Animal Control. No other fire department services needed. Rescue Engine 2 returned to service.
