Information on Courthouse Confederate Memorial Relocation

On November 23, 2021, during a regular meeting of the King George County Board of Supervisors, where a Public Hearing was held, said Board of Supervisors took action to authorize the relocation of the Confederate memorial on the grounds of the County Courthouse and to solicit offers, consistent with the Virginia Code:
§ 15.2-1812. Memorials for war veterans.
B. Prior to removing, relocating, contextualizing, or covering any such publicly owned monument or memorial, the local governing body shall publish notice of such intent in a newspaper having general circulation in the locality. The notice shall specify the time and place of a public hearing at which interested persons may present their views, not less than 30 days after publication of the notice. After the completion of the hearing, the governing body may vote whether to remove, relocate, contextualize, or cover the monument or memorial. If the governing body votes to remove, relocate, contextualize, or cover the monument or memorial, the local governing body shall first, for a period of 30 days, offer the monument or memorial for relocation and placement to any museum, historical society, government, or military battlefield. The local governing body shall have sole authority to determine the final disposition of the monument or memorial. Part B of (Virginia Code - Part B of 15.2-1812)
At its meeting on November 23, 2021, after published notice and a public hearing, the King George County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution approving the removal of the Confederate monument from the County Courthouse grounds. As required by Virginia law for a thirty day period commencing on December 29, 2021, the County is accepting offers for potential locations to relocate the monument. Written proposals may be submitted by museums, historical societies, government entities, military battlefields, or other third parties. Written proposals should be submitted to the attention of the County Administrator and include a proposed timeline for removal, proposed location or disposition for the monument, proposed source of funds for costs, terms for proposed continued public access (if any), and any other terms the proposer may wish to have considered. The Board of Supervisors retains sole discretion as to the final disposition of the monument, including accepting or rejecting any proposals received.
